Lady Taverners National Finals 2006

U-15 Girls National Champions Again!!

The Wood U-15’s won this year’s National Club Competition which took place at King Edwards School, Birmingham on Sunday 13th August.

On a rain affected day, Harold Wood beat Lullington CC from Derbyshire in the semi final which set up a final against Bath CC, which was a repeat of the final from 2004. The weather allowed no play which meant the final would be decided by a “bowl out” – crickets equivalent to a penalty shoot out.

4 girls bowled 2 balls each at the stumps, and at the end of this the scores were level on 2 hits each which meant sudden death where first team to hit would win.  After several misses from the Wood girls and Bath which made the contest nerve wracking for all those watching (especially the coach!!) Elissa Penketh bowled the winning ball, hitting the top of off stump.

This is the second national title in 3 years for the Girls.

Squad: Dani Armes (captain), Stacey Bysouth, Emma Stubbings, Elissa Penketh, Lauren Onojaife, Beth MacGregor, Catherine Dalton, Rebecca Reid, Beth Langston

Lady Taverners Regional Finals 2006

U-15 Girls win to reach National Finals

HWCC Girls won the Regional Finals of the Lady Taverners U-15 Club Competition on Sunday 23rd July at Bedford School. Playing in a round robin tournament against Hayes Hurracanes, Underhill and Redoutables, the girls won 3 matches out of 3 to finish top of the group and qualify for the National Finals day for the 3rd successive year.

The first match was against Hayes Hurracanes from Kent. Hayes batted first and score 72-5 from their 10 overs. The Wood’s ground fielding was excellent, Cath Dalton with a direct hit run out led the way, and this backed up some tidy bowling. Dani Armes and Elissa Penketh picking up the wickets. The girls then set about chasing the target in fine style. Lauren Onojaife scoring 25 and retiring leaving Elissa, 24 not out and Dani, 16 not out to complete the win. HWCC finishing on 73-0 from 8 overs.

The second match against Underhill from Middlesex was unfortunately a bit of a mis match. The girls batted first and scored 100 for 2 from 10 overs. Dani, Lauren and Beth Langston all scoring 28 runs and retiring. Underhill could then only manage 27 for 6 in reply with Dani picking up 2 for 2 and Beth Langston 2 for 10, there was also a wicket each for Emma Stubbings and Cath Dalton.

The third and final match was against Redoutables from Surrey. HWCC batted first again and scored 85 for 7. Lauren again getting to 25 and a good partnership between Cath Dalton, 13 and Beth MacGregor 19. Dani the npicked up a wicket first ball and the girls controlled the match from then onwards. The bowling and fielding was good and Redoutables were bowled out for 53. This win gave Harold Wood Girls the tournament victory.

Lady Taverners National Finals 2005

Frustration as rain hits competition

Harold Wood Girls U-15’s went to Stowe School in Buckinghamshire on Sat 13th August to defend their National Club title.

Drawn in Group 1,three matches were to be played against Bradford CC, Plymouth Civil Service and Meir Heath.

Match 1 v Bradford CC.

Harold Wood batted first and against a good bowling attack from the Yorkshire team scored 55 for 5 from their 8 overs.  Everyone got a start without going on to a big score. Joanne Cook 10, Beth MacGregor 8 and Cath Dalton 6.

The total looked to be about 15 runs short of a good total, however the Wood girls bowling and fielding soon turned this into a winning score. Cath Dalton picked up 2 wickets, sharp close in fielding from Joanne Cook produced 2 run outs and then Joanne, Rachel Barron and Beth MacGregor picked up a wicket each.  They were also helped by 2 outstanding catches from Hannah Courtnell.  Bradford closing on 47 for 7, a win for the Wood Girls by 8 runs.

Match 2 v Plymouth

Again the Wood batted first, this time the batting never got going and in the 8 overs they only scored 39-6 against disciplined Plymouth bowling.  Stacey Bysouth and Rachel Barron with 7 each were top scorers.

The rain started as the girls began to defend this total and it began to make bowling very difficult.  They all showed great character as in what became a very heavy downpour the girls made Plymouth use 6 overs to get the total despite the ball slipping a lot.  Rachel Barron picked up a wicket and Joanne Cook only conceded 6 runs from her 2 overs.  Plymouth 40 for 1.  Lost.

This was eventually the end of the day as the heavy rain set in and caused frustration for all as the teams only completed 2 matches each and the final placings were decided on run rate with the third group matches not played and then no play offs.

Girls Qualify for National Finals

The U-15’s qualified for the Lady Taverners National Finals again, as they came runners up in the South East Regional Finals at Bedford School on Sunday 10 July.

In what was a long day in very hot conditions the girls performed well to have a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, which put them in second place in the league behind Mote CC form Kent, but with a chance to defend their National Title.

Squad: Joanne Cook, Rachel Barron, Danielle Armes, Stacey Bysouth, Amy Harvey, Beth MacGregor, Lauren Onojaife, Catherine Dalton, Beth Langston

Results:

HWCC 94-3  Joanne Cook 29 not out, Amy Harvey 25 ret’d

Mote CC 96-2

Lost by 6 wkts

A close game to start with between the best two sides in the competition.  The Wood girls suffered with two run outs in the first over, and at the end of their 12 overs were probably 15 runs short of a winning total. Mote achieving the win with 1 over to spare.

HWCC 109-2 Lauren Onojaife 27 ret’d, Danielle Armes 26 ret’d, Beth MacGregor 20

Headstone Manor 70-3

Won by 39 runs

Back to form in the second match where a big score was always going to be enough to win.

Charlbury CC 27-6  Catherine Dalton 2-14

HWCC 29-0

Won by 8 wkts

A very good bowling performance kept the Oxfordshire team’s total to a low score and Danielle and Lauren knocked off the runs in 3 overs.

HWCC 115-1   Danielle Armes 27 ret’d, Joanne Cook 26 not out

Chilterns CC  72-6    Catherine Dalton 3-15, Beth MacGregor 2-14

Won by 43 runs

Wood Girls in Run Fest

Harold Wood Girls, Danielle Armes and Gemma Dowler, were involved in a run fest for Hall Mead School against Coopers Coburn School on Tuesday 5 July in the Essex Schools Cup Competition.

In an 18 over match Hall Mead batted first and amassed 192 runs.  Danielle scored her first century, finishing on 102 before being retired not out in the 15th over.  It included two sixes and sixteen fours.

Gemma also joined in the fun with a rapid 30 not out – her highest score of the season – as she continues to go from strength to strength with her batting.  Gemma and  Dani also picked up a wicket each before rain ended the match with Hall Mead winning on run rate.

A First at the Wood

The 4th XI match on Saturday 25 June was notable for a first for Harold Wood C.C.  Danielle Armes and Stacey Bysouth both made their debuts for the 4th XI and became the first women/girls to play league cricket for any senior eleven at the club.

Both girls acquitted themselves extremely well, with Danielle producing a good spell of bowling (unlucky not to take a wicket!) and also taking two good catches, and Stacey batting well at no.6 showing confidence and good application.
